5 Fun Ways to Get Kids Excited About Brushing Their Teeth

October 13, 2026

Tooth-brushing battles are one of the most universal parenting experiences there is. The good news: most kids don't actually dislike brushing — they dislike being told what to do. Reframe it as a game, a story, or something they're "in charge of," and a lot of the resistance melts away.

1. Turn it into a two-minute mission

A visible timer — a sand timer, a phone stopwatch, or a two-minute song — gives brushing a clear beginning and end. Kids tend to resist open-ended tasks far more than ones with a finish line they can see coming.

2. Let them "check" their own results

Kids love feedback. A fun pretend "scan" or a sticker chart that marks a good brushing session gives them a visible payoff for something that otherwise has no immediate reward — the benefits of brushing are invisible and years away, which is a hard sell for a five-year-old.

3. Pick a toothbrush buddy

A favorite character or color toothbrush, replaced the moment it starts looking worn, keeps the tool itself appealing rather than a chore object.

4. Brush together

Modeling the behavior — standing side-by-side at the sink, both brushing — does more than any lecture. Kids copy what they see far more readily than what they're told.

5. Make the story, not the toothpaste, the point

"Let's chase away the sugar bugs" or a quick, playful pretend scan that ends with a "sparkle check" gives brushing a narrative. It doesn't have to be elaborate — a 30-second bit of silliness is often all it takes to turn a nightly argument into a shared joke.
